How Professional Teeth Whitening Is Done

Professional teeth whitening, or bleaching, can be an effective way to remove stains and lighten your teeth. Here, our Kanata dentists explain how the teeth whitening process is done.

Teeth naturally darken with age. Other lifestyle factors such as smoking, consuming dark beverages like coffee and tea, and taking certain medications can also increase surface stains and darken the appearance of teeth.

Professional teeth whitening is a non-invasive treatment that uses peroxide-based bleaching agents to lighten the colour of your teeth. Oxygen acts on the tooth enamel as the peroxide breaks down, creating the whitening effect.

At Hazeldean Dental Group, our dentists offer ZOOM! in-office and at-home teeth whitening options

ZOOM! In-Office Teeth Whitening

In-office professional teeth bleaching is a popular whitening method among our patients, because it can be completed in one or two sessions.

Your dental hygienist will begin the whitening process by placing a rubber shield on your gums to guard them from the whitening solution.

Next, they will apply the solution directly to your teeth with a small brush-like applicator, and leave it to activate on your teeth for about 15 minutes using a low-heat lamp. Your hygienist will then wipe off the solution and repeat the application process.

This total process takes about two hours. Depending on your particular case, you may need additional treatments and your dentist will work with you to create a treatment plan for your smile.

ZOOM! At-Home Teeth Whitening

To get started with a take-home teeth whitening kit, you will first need to visit the dentist so an impression of your teeth can be taken, and custom whitening trays can be created for you.

Once the trays are ready, usually in about two weeks, you will return to the dentist's office to ensure the trays are a good fit before you head home with them and the whitening solution.

At home, you will wear the trays for about 30 minutes a day for a two-week period, unless otherwise recommended by your dentist.

Both in-office and at-home teeth whitening options are safe, effective ways to lighten the colour of your teeth and brighten your smile.
